so i just got out of the theater i thought it was excellent beautiful, violent it is about sacrifice more than anything else seems simple enough i guess but the bad reviews i have seen seem to miss that point
Anyway, too many reviewers missed the point entirely. Apparently they didn't realize that the movie is based on a graphic novel, hence the deviations from historical fact.
My opinion. The movie was excellent. I didn't like some of the things added that weren't in the graphic novel. Mainly, the queen taking it up the ass by that chump. I think that it would have been better if she had turned down his offer and he make false accusations before the counsel (remember the general worrying about meeting in her bed chambers). The storyline could've been exactly the same, except we wouldn't have a twice cooked casserole queen.
My washing machine doesn't work. Someone fucked my washing machine. My washing machine does not work. Someone fucked my washing machine. I said my washing machine doesn't work! Why did you fuck my washing machine?!?! FUCK!
Lol.. those are the works to a song I'm listening to.
That movie looks sick as hell. Sick in a good way. John, how close to the comic was it? I think most reviewers need to be shot in the head. How can you review a comic book movie and never have read it to review it?
Fuck 'em. This was pure genius. i will get down on my busted knees and pray for a Watchmen movie.
yeah real close to the comic Chef right down to leonidas eating an apple after a fight my girlfriend asked when we were going to see it again already some numbers for the weekend:
The grim warrior tale sold an estimated $70 million worth of tickets during its first three days of release, setting a new record for a March release, the film's distributor Warner Bros. Pictures said on Sunday.
....
Its achievement was all the more noteworthy given that the previous record-holder for the month, 2006's "Ice Age 2: The Meltdown," with $68 million, was a family-oriented cartoon, while "300" is an unabashedly gruesome spectacle with an "R" rating that prevents viewers under 17 attending without adult supervision.
In fact, the opening for "300" ranks as the third-highest for an R-rated movie, behind "The Matrix Reloaded" ($91 million) and "The Passion of the Christ" ($83 million).
gruesome spectacle indeed...the only thing gruesome that I've ever seen so far is Happy Tree Friends.
300 wasn't as epic as I'd hoped it would be actually. I was thinking of the scene in LOTR whenGandalf comes down the side of the mountain and I couldn't breathe through tha whole scene out of sheer epicness...this was a little bit like hmmmmmmmmmm, pukey looking stupid ass Persian idiots fighting the best forces in the world. WOWOWOWOW that is so scary...
Even the Immortals didn't appear to be as strong a warrior (what was that?? that's not epic...the enemy is supposed to be as strong or stronger not weak or weaker)
i actually thought happy tree friends was a kid oriented tv show, as i havent seen an episode before. so i turned on the tv and left my then 2 yr old to watch so i could clean the kitchen.
15 minutes later, she was running towards me, crying, saying the poor little creatures's head got hacked off.
next time i'll make sure to stick to cartoon network (minus the adult swim version).
I like Pajiba's comment section and the article that goes into a bit of detailed opinion of the movie. Some slight spoilage if you haven't seen the movie, but I would reccomend that everyone see the movie and maybe forget about the reviews and all the hoity toity commentary. I don't know what it was about 300...I guess my Epic cherry was popped a while back and anything short of virtual reality epic movies (where you experience the battle yourself) could do it for me now.
i just wish something female oriented could get elevated to 10 % of the status these 'guy' movies/'for the guys' things have gotten. impossible i know.....
yep real you say female buy more cds/ and that whomever at the movie studios give a damn about them.
hmmmm...that's because females are not considered to be epic or heroic. Superwoman may be a change, but even she is buff and has to live with lesbians on an island to make the male audience feel she can exist on the plane of male testosterone-pumped action/epicness.
I love those two movies. I was mad at the end of the departed. Real fuckin cheap way to end the movie. It was as if they were shooting and Scorcese said, "Well, 2.5 hours, its about that time, eh? Lets kill everyone off because there is no way we'll end this sonbitch short of 3 hours otherwise."
jm i'm not saying females can't like the departed. because they do.also of note can females 'idenitfy with male leads alot more than guys do with females...
ok jm what i liked about the departed was the twist/layers.
but maybe it just me i could 'respect' it. but liked no.and was the level of respect i had for it.enough to put it in the 'yeah' support it category for me. no
guess it's just me.that's one of the reasons i never watch anything/but just read reviews. i haven't been impressed with anything in the reality or on aesthics.(sp?) in years and it's been like that for years...
maybe i can't surrendor(sp?) enough of myself when i'm viewing to get ultra immersed.maybe this further proof of what a weirdo i am....
everyone on screen is so much smarted and better looking than me.and all those females i bet i couldn't even get a handshake from. *ha ha*
there's so much/many views concerning art/society or even being human that i think are 300% wrong/backwards or beyond arcane.
and than you have someone that only likes 'for the guy' films or broad comedies telling you your wrong. it just seems that if more isn't accepted things will never change.......
lord or whomever your 'normal' person hates anything different. until it gets absorbed by the mainstream. ha ha....
but seriously.alot of guys just like 'guy things'. and don't like any females with a media profile aside from uh on a hormonal level. depressing yes ?????
sorry i'm more fragmented today than usual...
i wish i could like stuff.it just it's not even worth the effort to watch.nothing wows me.so whay watch if your not going to be impressed.....
i'm a total wimp.more and more i can't relate. don't care about guys beating each other up......
ok at least in 300 they have their shirt off.and are in those speedo type things.....
2007 looks like it's not going to be good year for movies. just sequeals. big action stuff...
maybe later in the year after summer.....but i doubt it...
and no i'm not on drugs. it's just me. this is me....
Glim there are alway good movies being released, its just hard to ever hear about them because most of the time they are independent or foreign. I think that they are way better, because they are more realistic in a way that the viewer could identify with the protagonist or any of the other characters.
I just got back from seeing "300" and loved it. A definite must see on the big screen, if you can. The bods are worth seeing, yes, but the story is even better. Finally, a film worth the money to go see.
i like opera and Ellen, the Bitch that annoys me is Tyra Banks, i fucking walked in on my cousin watching her once and she was rolling on the floor in her pjs and screaming and yelling like she was on crack or just did a few eccies..
moe..how did you get the 300 ad. i mean the first movie ad i noticed(here) was for open water/adrift thing. something that most were unfamiliar (no problem with that factor though) and now 300...
a movie that's so big(now) it needs no more advertising.(well you know what i mean).the ads go from 'obscurity' to a beyond well known/ultra now over night. wow..
oh and both ads go directly to an official web site. *awesome* :)
i may not have much and interest in the 300 movie(yeah i'm lame) but i think it's beyond beyond cool gerard butler was in the phantom of the opera movie too ! (ok see i have no interest in seeing that either..)
i just likw the head f**k aspect of his being in both !!!! :)
talk about *avoiding typecasting*. ha ha..... cool... :)
and from the bio thing i saw on allmovie.com
gerard was also in a stage version of 'trainspotting' cool...ah who is this guy ???
As far as I know most movies come to Spain at least a few weeks after their American premier. With exceptions of course. Pan´s Labrynth was already almost finished playing here by the time it was shown in the states. Maybe Goya´s Ghost too.
But anyway, it really doesn´t seem like my kind of movie. Not that it necessarily means anything, but I HATED Sin City. And I´m just not a fan of over-the-top violence in general.
I may see it one day, but probably not in the theater.
hmm yeah ..seems they often give a movie different release dates for different regions. but it still backfires on them....
well since you mentioned it sin city is a *good*.example of how in some parts of the world when it got a 'big screen'/now you can see in the cinema release.
it was very possible to pop over the states version of amazon.com and buy it. yep....
anyway i think the studios now notice that prople will buy stuff from where ever via the net.
example the film that won best foreign picture 'the lives of others' i think there's retail dvd out(non region one.but all regions players are common. so are computers dvd drives) but it has no subs. wait correction it has no *english* subs... so it's not going to do *me* any good...
300 is a fucking great movie. It is, of course, a highly stylized, inaccurate, and single sided version of history, and I can see them showing this in the US Military -- shit, I was ready to go out and kill some Persians at the end -- but only the winners get to write history. Xerxes and his Persians won that battle but lost the war, and Alexander sealed the deal for good a few decades later.
The great philosophies, arts, and sciences of ancient Greece prevailed, and no 3rd world Middle Eastern country of today poses any great threat to the democracies of the West that followed. 9/11 never really roused much thirst for revenge in me, mainly because I'd like to believe that it was the actions of a few fanatics and some corrupt leaders, not a representation of how most Muslims of the Middle East view the West. But if things were more clear cut, like they were back in the 5th century BC, a war between Western and Middle Eastern ideas and ideals, with the latter wanting to enslave or obliterate the former, then I'd be the first one to push the button. Luckily, no such threat exists.
anyways, I think that the reason why most iranians dont care about their country anymore and have this collective amnesia is because they kinda know that the big empires of the West can do whatever they want with their country- Iran is a great example of that- mossadegh, khomeini, etc...
So it would be in their interest to join up behind the UN's agenda, rebel against their tyrant leadership etc. Any empire would look bad if they wiped out a peace loving nation.
Same thing. The US wouldn't be able to wipe out a Scandinavian country, because they would look like murderers, and they wouldn't be able to corrupt its leadership, because the people are free thinking and peace loving individuals. But as long as the Mideast keeps fighting internally, its people will continue to take it up the ass from whoever has enough power to stand on someone's back and shout out words they've been longing to hear.
people can't do much against today's government and military in the IRI, especially when half of their people are either too old to fight or resist or too young or simply not resisting then the other half that does want to resist is too young or too old but has a small (in the millions) that would resist but needs some firepower (yeah, I guess if the people did start rioting that would make for a good week or so then if they were backed by the world it might start something)
That would mean a revolution in the millions though backed by the military, or the military taking on the government (coups) and then gradually bringing in democracy by transitioning into a government again? just not that simplified but the same general idea
the only figure i can recall that had a chance at reshaping that country and influencing the middle-east was Mossadegh, and the intellectuals and young generation of that time (before Khomeini) and also figures in Arab countries that were hoping to nationalize and basically do their own thing- which I don't know much about except that I saw a documentary on Egypt and thought that the UAE is a great example of how they modernized (albeit they are not a democratic country) and are "peaceful" with the world (they're planning a future on crack for that country...crazy people)
Problem with getting that many people under one cause is there needs to be what all people feel as a grave injustice, a central enemy (the US), or both. In the late 70's, having a hatred for America and it's disregard for a Muslim society, while trying to reshape the country, was enough to push the people to the boiling point....Unfortunately you need a majority of the people in unison under a cause to spark a revolution.
Well, they have oil, and it was the birthplace of early civilizations... it's not like they haven't had time to get their act together. But riches are of course a curse, unless it is at least perceived to be distributed somewhat widely among the people protecting and dying for it.
people there do feel a grave injustice...towards their own government. it's just a matter of when and where they'll turn that feeling into action.
oh, the oil isn't in the people's hands although they get use some of the oil money and process it through social and economic projects and infrastructure but it's being wasted even while being used for highways (the highways they build aren't actually revolutionizing their transportation issues but rather delaying the problems), education (only 100,000 individuals get somekind of financial aid and the rest have to pay out of their own pockets or dont go to school), etc.
anyhow. 300 was a great movie, i want to see it again but i'd rather see something about socrates.
Well, that's what I said. In some countries you have people paying taxes without getting much back, they're relatively lucky; in other countries you have people dying for resources they can't even call their own.
I don't think Socrates is next in line for a pop movie, but the Odyssey should be pretty ripe by now.
I think they could do a wonderful independent film about Socrates and his last days...Kind of doing a retrospective as he's waiting to die, twarting his own rescue attemps and arguing himself to a death sentence. Less Hollywood....More substance.
So I finally saw the movie. I knew it wasn't going to be my kind of movie, and I wasn't disappointed. I'll give it credit where is due. It was beautifully done (Just like Sin City, which also failed to impress me). And I get that it was based on a graphic novel, but my main complaint was that the dialogue was so lame. It was hard to appreciate the beauty of the movie with all of the cheesy one liners that Leonidis was spitting out. The narration was okay... the dialogue just sucked, in my opinion.
Other than that it fulfilled its purpose of being an awesome epic (yawn). So I won't complain.
[arg... 25 edits later and I THINK my english is somewhat coherent]
I haven't seen 300 yet because I was banned from my cineplex. We had all lined up in front of the theater for about 30 minutes, and then they brought us in. I had to stand right beside these two fat, horse-faced lesbians eating each others tongues like they were making a political statement or something. So, like 30 minutes later, we end up shuffling in the theater and these *beep* bitches start bitching about having to wait when the movie is about to start, mind you, it was 11 and it was a midnight showing. It turns out they were going to see that stupid Jim Carrey movie 23 and they were missing it. So, the ugliest of the two bitches just exclaims like no one's there "This is the wrong *beep* movie!" I just had to do what I did next. I shouted at the top of my lungs "This is SPARTA" and kicked her in the chest, causing her to fall down about 8 steps to the floor. Most were shocked, but about 80% of the theater started to cheer, and I was forcibly thrown out by 2 officers. Charges are going to be pressed against me apparently, but it was worth it.
