Thanks King Biscuit...I'm Brazilian (no, I'm not hot like the Victoria's Secret's models but I'm not ugly either) and I'm graduated in Journalism. I'm 5'2" and I weigh 100 or 101 lbs (not so sure about the American measurement system) so I obviously avoid commenting on those threads where someone calls this or that celebrity a dwarf sized /midget bitch. My heroes are Leonard Cohen, Tom Waits and Nick Cave (I like calling them "The Holy Trinity") and a French-Algerian singer called Rachid Taha (oh boy...his name is pronounced just like that guy "Rasheed", but that's just an unfortunate coincidence).
Congrats on the journalism degree. Sounds like you are a good weight for your height to me. Those threads in which people dwarf size/midget hate are a little crazy. Only ever owned one Leonard Cohen album, had a track called 'Everybody Knows' on it, cool album. Tom Wait and Nick Cave are okay too. Not really my style, but I've heard one or two songs by them that I can get behind. :) Haven't heard of Rachid Taha..may go see what I can find.
Hey Eve....Dark Rider....Tom Waits....Brilliant. Great about the Jounalism thing. I think they say that Telemundo news here in the US has more watchers than all three major network nightly news programs combined. Glad to see your part of the board!
Anybody that can relate to our discomfort with the front page posts and calls "that guy Rasheed" an unfortunate coincidence is more than welcome. So, thanks for the introduction, hope you like it here and you come back. You can find more about us in the other posts in this category.
King Biscuit, you can find one of his (Taha) songs in the Black Hawk Down's soundtrack (it's called "Barra Barra" and it plays during the scene where Eric Bana, while carrying a bike, is rescued or something) and his version for "Rock the Casbah" is simply priceless (even Mick Jones played with him a while ago). I'm so in love with his music I'm willing to learn French next year (I would like to learn Algerian Arabic actually, but it's impossible to find a course here where I live). And Eduardo, I've never watched Telemundo (this company is more for Spanish speakers and we speak Portuguese in Brazil). I don't think it's available for cable tv subscribers either (at least not the one we have at our home). The biggest tv company in Brazil is Globo but I gave up watching it (it's as conservative as FOX).
I watched a live version of Barra Barra on you tube Eve. Have to admit, my first impressions were that it wasn't my thing. But I stuck with it and as I got used to it and the band started to get into it more, it grew on me. I quite liked it in the end!
