So we should handle open forums like child-raising? In that case, bans should be handled like "time outs" and thus only temp. bans.

How I see it...
As long as a poster is contributing and not just here to be rude, it should be fine.
If it stops after four or five replies, it should be fine.
If it's not leading on into every damn thread, after poster A's every subsequent post (IE, poster B is crapflooding, and I've been guilty in the past).
It really should be fine.

Obviously, it can get to be too much for posters not involved and for that there are PMs, and even whispers IN THREAD! It can all be handled on the sidelines and that should be utilized. One not involved should be able to even request that whomever should GTFO and take it somewhere private.

I do get the other side of the fence. But the users should not be silenced if they have not done something shocking and fucked-up enough. I don't like when moderators over-kill, and I wholly believe that this is what has occurred. Like I said, I don't know which did it and I don't really care to, it doesn't really matter because I like the moderators and I think they do just fine. I just want this to be said since others can't say it for themselves, another negative of just straight banning someone.

Now I'm going to be quiet. I'm too easily tempted to reply.
